Hinge Pin Tool Mercury Marine - 18-9861 - Sierra

The tool is not sufficiently hard to remove the hinge pin in my 1978 Mercruiser 898. The teeth rounded before it was able to break the pin loose. I didn't even apply excessive force because I didn't want to chance stripping the aluminum threads in the gimbal. If the tool was hardened better I might recommend it because the fit and length were good.

Stripped the tool right away on a 18 inch breaker bar. Don't buy

What was I needed to complete my project.

This tool appears to be made of too soft a steel to remove the stainless steel hinge pins. The points on the tool will round-off very easily when just a slight amount of torque is applied. I should have choosen the Mallory brand tool instead.

I got this through iboats.com because I apparently need it to remove my bell housing. During the first 5 minutes of me having the tool it is now a paperweight. At first I thought I stripped out my Hinge Pins, but no the tool itself stripped out. It appears that the tool metal they used was soft enough that a wrench with a cheater bar was to much for it. Now I don't know how I am going to remove my Pins.
