With gasoline now contaning 10% ethanol, removing water from the fuel is important. Ethanol attracts moisture from the air, and moisture in the engine is bad news. I've used Sierra fuel/water separators for years, and never had any such related problems with water. They should be changed yearly, more frequently if you run more than the average.
